Three Tips for Planning Your Next Remodeling Project

Written by HPM Building Supply | Feb 10, 2023 2:01:21 AM

If you're like us, January and February is the time to plan your projects for the year and get organized. Remodeling can be a fantastic option when you want something new but don't necessarily have the time, energy, or budget to go all out!

A remodel should be fun and exciting, a time to breathe new life into a dated room and a chance to start fresh. Unfortunately, it can also be stressful and have you questioning if the new space is worth the process (and your sanity). So we asked our seasoned designers for their best tips for planning a remodel.

Whether you're gutting your entire kitchen or replacing a sink in the guest bathroom - with these expert tips in mind, you can rest assured that you're prepared for everything your project might throw at you.

1. Gather Your Inspiration

  • Bring in your inspiration photos to help your Kitchen & Bath Designer guide you to the look you want and help narrow cabinet and countertop options.
  • Follow @hpmhomedesign on Instagram and Facebook and @hpmhawaii on Pinterest for some ideas.
  • When planning your remodel, make a list and prioritize your wants and needs. Do you need more storage space but want new floors? It'll help prioritize how you spend your budget. Not sure where to start? Make a list of what you like and don't like about your current space.

2. Manage Your Expectations

  • When you expect perfection or a quick turnaround time, it will always disappoint you when it doesn't happen perfectly. Although this doesn't happen all the time, when it does it really causes extra stress and frustration. Researching and reading blogs/posts about others' past experiences will help you understand the process and potential delays (like weather, scheduling, shipping, etc.).
  • Things can come up in a remodel project that you didn't plan for. Give yourself extra time and budget to spare yourself the added stress.

3. Know Your Budget

  • Understand what things cost and what you can afford. A preliminary budget will help your Designer recommend the best options that fit your budget but still meet your aesthetic. What’s worst than falling in love with a particular piece just to find out it’s completely out of your price point?
  • Ask questions! Refrain from assuming that certain items are included or that adding a small detail or last-minute change won't affect the cost. Discussing all of the fine details beforehand will help you stay within your budget and reduce unexpected costs.

A remodel can be a big undertaking, but partnering with an HPM Kitchen & Bath Designer will help you manage some of the unavoidable stress so you can enjoy the journey. We'll be there every step of the way, from planning to execution, to ensure your vision comes to life.
