Spring is in the air, and you know what that means - time for some good old spring cleaning! What better way to refresh our homes than by giving our high-traffic areas some extra TLC? One area that we often overlook is our cabinets. Not only are they important in keeping our spaces organized, but they can also potentially be one of the biggest investments in our home.

If you want to keep your cabinets looking and working like new for years to come, here are some of our favorite tips for keeping your cabinets in top shape! And remember, when in doubt, always consult the manufacturer’s care guide. (We’ve attached some at the bottom of this blog.)

1. Clean Regularly

Regular cleaning is vital to keeping your cabinetry looking its best! Use a soft, damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the exterior surfaces of your cabinets, including the doors and drawers. To maintain the finish, avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasives that can scratch or damage it.  Do not use petroleum-type cleaners or those containing ammonia, alcohol, or abrasives. If you need a stronger cleaning solution, mix a small amount of mild soap with water and use that instead. Always refer to the care instructions provided during purchase. A manufacturer's care guide can indicate products that are safe to use on the particular finish of your cabinet.

2. Avoid Water Damage

Water can be particularly damaging to cabinets, so it is important to avoid getting them excessively wet. Especially in Hawaii's moist and humid climate, where extensive wet weather can contribute to mold, keeping your cabinets dry will pay off in the long run. Be careful when washing dishes near your cabinets or using the sink, and wipe up any spills or splashes right away.

3. Protect from Heat and Steam

Heat and steam can also damage cabinets, so be careful when cooking or using appliances like the stove or dishwasher. In addition, glues and other adhesives used in the manufacturing process can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures. Use a range hood to vent steam and cooking odors away from your cabinets.

4. Address Scratches and Dents

Despite your best efforts, your cabinets are bound to get scratches and dents over time. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to address these. For minor scratches, use a wood touch-up marker or crayon that matches the color of your cabinets to fill in the scratch. For deeper scratches or dents, consult your warranty information or consider contacting a professional to repair the damage.
