HPM Building Supply is proud to join the Hawai‘i Island Community Development Corporation (HICDC) in helping local families achieve homeownership through its Self-Help Housing Program.  

There's something powerful about watching families build their homes with their own hands. This November, we had the privilege of celebrating alongside ten families in Ainaloa as they moved into homes they constructed through the Hawaiʻi Island Community Development Corporation's (HICDC) Self-Help Housing Program.

HPM Building Supply is proud to support HICDC's mission of facilitating housing development for low- and moderate-income households on Hawaiʻi Island. Through their innovative Self-Help Housing Program, qualified families don't just receive homes, they actively participate in building them, creating sweat equity while developing construction skills and forging lasting friendships with their fellow participants.

One of our HPM owner-employees, Daemerson Moses, a Purchasing Assistant in Hilo, took part in the program with his ʻohana.

For this Ainaloa project, HPM provided discounted materials and logistical support, supplying everything from wall panels and trusses to windows, siding, drywall, doors, and plumbing and electrical materials. But the real value wasn't just in the materials, it was in seeing these resources transform into places where families will build their futures.

The blessing ceremony in early November was truly special to witness. Walking through one of the completed homes, seeing the quality craftsmanship and hearing stories behind the building process, brought the meaning of "community" into sharp focus. As families received their traditional hammer plaques—symbols of the work they put into not just their own homes, but their neighbors' homes too—there were tears of joy and embraces all around. 

This project's success reflects the power of collaboration. Mahalo nui loa to HICDC for their leadership and to USDA Rural Development for providing crucial grant funding. We're also grateful to our fellow partners: Hawaiian Community Lending, Hawaiian Community Assets, and the Hawai'i County Office of Housing & Community Development.
