HPM Building Supply & HICDC Help 10 Families Achieve Homeownership for the Holidays

HPM Building Supply is proud to join the Hawai‘i Island Community Development Corporation (HICDC) in helping local families achieve homeownership through its Self-Help Housing Program.

The mission focus of HICDC is to facilitate the development of housing for low- and moderate-income households on Hawaii Island through direct development and self-help development coordination. HICDC’s Self-Help Housing Program is named so because it requires participants to pitch in with building all the homes in the project, granting qualified applicants the opportunity to help build their own homes and pay affordable mortgages.

HPM assisted in providing discounted materials and logistical support for the construction of ten homes in Hawaiian Paradise Park, which were completed in December 2022. The families moved into their newly built homes just in time for the holidays.

With guidance from HICDC and construction supervisors, it was amazing to see each family make their individual homeownership dreams come true.

One of our HPM owner-employees, Christine Rocha, a Home Planning Consultant in Hilo, took part in the program with her family.

“Before participating in this program, I had never used a power tool in my life. But I am so glad I pushed myself to make this happen for my three children. We put in 10+ hour days, rain or shine, on the weekends, to get this house finished. As a single mother, I wanted to be able to leave my children with something and provide a secure place for them to live. Now, we will always have a place to call home.”

During the blessing ceremony last month, we saw the completed homes made with wall panels, trusses, windows, siding, drywall, doors, and plumbing and electrical materials from HPM. We saw the joy on the families’ faces as they entered the houses they’d built with their own hands and said, “We’re home.”

Mahalo nui loa to the HICDC for making it possible for local families to achieve homeownership and to USDA Rural Development grants for contributing to the program’s funding. Mahalo to the other partners for this program, Hawaiian Community Lending, Hawaiian Community Assets, and the Hawaii County Office of Housing & Community Development. When we work together, we can make positive change happen on a larger scale.
