At some point in nearly every kitchen or bathroom remodel, the conversation comes back to countertops, and more specifically, to the tension between what looks incredible and what actually holds up.
Marble is breathtaking. It's also porous, prone to etching, and requires a level of maintenance that most busy households simply can't commit to. Granite is durable and beautiful, but it needs periodic sealing and can vary widely in consistency. And for homeowners in Hawaiʻi, where kitchens get real use, entertaining is a way of life, and the environment itself is harder on surfaces than most places, that tension between beauty and practicality matters more than it might elsewhere.
VIATERA Quartz is built to resolve that tension.
To help break down what VIATERA is, how it performs, and why it's one of the countertop options HPM Design Centers stands behind most confidently, we sat down with Kaylen, HPM's Hilo-based Senior Kitchen & Bath Designer. With years of experience helping Hawaiʻi homeowners navigate exactly these decisions, Kaylen brings a perspective that's equal parts design instinct and practical wisdom.
VIATERA is a premium engineered stone countertop, meaning it's manufactured rather than quarried, combining natural quartz (one of the hardest minerals on earth) with resins, pigments, and other materials to create a surface that's consistent, non-porous, and highly durable.
The result looks like natural stone, marble, quartzite, granite, but performs quite differently in everyday use. It's this combination that makes Viatera worth understanding before you make a countertop decision.
As Kaylen describes it: "VIATERA gives you the look of marble, quartzite, or granite without many of the worries that can come with natural stone." For homeowners who've spent time researching countertops and kept running into trade-offs, that's a meaningful distinction.
The countertop market is crowded. So, what actually differentiates VIATERA from the other engineered stone, natural stone, and solid surface options a homeowner might be weighing?
Kaylen points to a specific balance that's harder to find than it sounds: "What really stands out about VIATERA is the balance between style and practicality. The designs are beautiful and elevated but still made for real life."
That phrase made for real life, carries a lot of weight in a Hawaiʻi context. Island kitchens see heavy use. Families cook together. Guests gather. Countertops take on a role that goes beyond surface area. A material that looks stunning in a showroom but requires constant care, or that shows every water ring and cooking smudge, quickly becomes a source of stress rather than satisfaction.
VIATERA is engineered to hold up to all of that without asking you to change how you live.

One of the most common questions homeowners bring to a design consultation is some version of: "What's popular right now?" It's a reasonable question, nobody wants to invest in a kitchen remodel only to feel like the aesthetic is already dated.
| "Right now, we're seeing a lot of demand for soft whites, warm neutrals, and natural marble-inspired looks with subtle veining. People still love bright kitchens, but lately many homeowners are leaning toward warmer tones that make the space feel inviting and comfortable instead of overly stark." |
This tracks with a broader shift happening in kitchen design nationally, away from the cold, all-white aesthetic that dominated the 2010s and toward something that feels warmer, more lived-in, and more personal.
Within VIATERA's newer Quartzite Collection, Kaylen highlights two options she's particularly enthusiastic about:
Perla Verde and Crystallo Vera both deliver the natural movement, depth, and visual complexity that homeowners associate with real quartzite, while maintaining all the practical benefits of engineered stone.
"Some of the newer VIATERA colors are surprisingly realistic once everything is installed," Kaylen notes. "A lot of our clients are genuinely impressed by how closely VIATERA mimics the look of marble or quartzite while still being much easier to maintain."

Kaylen also makes a point worth sitting with: the most dramatic options in any showroom aren't always the best long-term choices. "I think some of the softer and more subtle colors are underrated. People are naturally drawn to dramatic veining, but the quieter designs tend to age beautifully and are more versatile long term. Sometimes less is more."
It's the kind of observation that only comes from having seen dozens of finished kitchens and knowing which choices clients are still happy with years later, and which ones they quietly wish they'd reconsidered.

Choosing a countertop isn't just a design decision, it's a decision about how your kitchen functions every single day. Here's what owning VIATERA actually looks like in practice.
Quartz is one of the hardest natural minerals, and VIATERA's engineered construction takes that inherent durability and reinforces it. It handles the demands of a busy kitchen, daily cooking, kids at the counter, frequent entertaining, without showing the wear that softer or more porous materials accumulate over time. Composed of 93% natural quartz, compared to 20 to 60% quartz in natural stone, VIATERA tends to have higher tensile strength than natural stone.

This is where VIATERA makes the strongest case against natural stone alternatives. Unlike marble (which etches from acidic substances like lemon juice or vinegar) or granite (which typically requires annual sealing), VIATERA's non-porous surface is inherently resistant to staining and doesn't require any sealing ever.
Day-to-day cleaning is straightforward: mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth handle almost everything. For tougher spots, a gentle household cleaner is all you need. There's no annual maintenance calendar, no worrying about whether the wine glass left a ring, no resealing projects to schedule.
For Hawaiʻi homeowners especially, where maintaining a home already comes with its own list of climate-specific demands, a countertop that simply doesn't add to that list is a meaningful quality-of-life benefit.
| VIATERA Quartz | Granite | Marble | |
| Sealing Required | Never | Periodically | Yes |
| Stain Resistance | Excellent | Good | Moderate |
| Etch Resistance | Excellent | Good | Low |
| Consistency | Uniform | Varies | Varies |
| Maintenance Level | Low | Medium | High |

Premium engineered stone can carry a premium price assumption but VIATERA's range is wider than most homeowners realize going in.
| "VIATERA has a pretty wide range of price points, which makes it a great option for a lot of homeowners," Kaylen explains. "Some colors are very budget-friendly, while others have a more luxury look and feel." |
She also points to something that makes VIATERA particularly well-suited for HPM's customer base: "One thing I really appreciate is that they run great specials throughout the year, which really helps local families and homeowners working within tighter budgets still achieve a beautiful space without compromising too much on style."
The takeaway: don't rule VIATERA out based on a price assumption. The range means there's likely an option that fits your project, and the promotions that run throughout the year can make even the elevated colorways more accessible than you'd expect.
Numbers and specifications only tell part of the story. Kaylen shares a project that illustrates what VIATERA can actually do in the right space:
| "One project that really stands out was a kitchen remodel where the homeowners originally wanted marble but were worried about the maintenance. We ended up choosing a VIATERA color with soft veining — and it completely transformed the space." |
It's a scenario that comes up more than you'd think: a homeowner drawn to marble's aesthetic, but realistic about the care it requires. In those situations, VIATERA doesn't feel like a compromise, it feels like the smarter version of the thing you wanted in the first place.
