Rising Above as a Community - HPM Maui

The island of Maui knows what resiliency and strength looks like. Since coming to Maui in 2020, HPM Building Supply has always supported the people of Maui during challenging times. From navigating the Covid-19 pandemic together, to recovering from last year’s wildfires, HPM is committed to be an active community steward and partner on Maui.

HPM is a leading supplier of high-quality building materials on the Valley Isle with convenient locations in Kīhei, Lāhainā, Makawao and Wailuku. HPM Maui has more than 50 owner-employees who call the island home. Meet a few of them below!

Clay Taylor, Outside Sales Representative

Clay_HeadshotFor more than 20 years, Clay Taylor has called Maui his second home. Having a wife who was born and raised on Maui, Clay always felt like the island was special. Since moving permanently to Maui in 2020, Clay began to see that it is the interconnectedness and beauty that he loves the most. He began working for HPM in 2022 and his role as Outside Sales Representative allows him to feel the island values more profoundly. “That’s the beauty of my work, because everything I do is tied to community,” said Clay.

Clay’s normal week at HPM consists of working with owners, builders, contractors, project managers, and developers on budgeting, estimating, and ordering all the way through the build cycle. A creative by trade with a previous career in film and music, Clay shifted to the sales industry and never looked back. Over the last 20 years, he has grown to love sales and customer service, especially when it comes to large development projects. At HPM, the idea of customer service is personified with the company’s culture. Clay believes that HPM has such impact because of the essential services and passion for serving the community.

“Our core values are heart, character and growth and I feel those words are very much lived by, especially from the top down,” shared Clay. “I haven’t seen values as authentic as it is at HPM,” he added.

Tony Baldwin, Senior Kitchen & Bath Designer

Tony_HeadshotTony Baldwin joined HPM in 2024 as a Senior Kitchen & Bath Designer for the Kīhei Design Center. For him, one of the things he appreciates most is the fact that HPM gives their employees the opportunity to be owners of the company through its Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). “I think it's an incredible opportunity to give to people,” said Tony. “When they [employees] are a part of something, itʻs not just a job. You have an investment in the company and youʻre gonna get out of it what you put into it.” Originally from Ohio, Tony is a former chef and restaurateur. His shift into design happened as an accidental discovery. After a culinary teaching job fell through, Tony accepted an appliance specialist position at a big box store. That is where he was exposed to design work and realized he had a natural talent for it. That talent landed him in Maui for a previous designer job more than three years ago. Tony loves the community spirit on the Valley Isle. “In terms of community, that is what HPM is about,” Tony shared. “Our leaders are family and community-oriented people. To live in the aloha spirit of things is special. It's hard to find, and I feel privileged to be a part of it.”

Gary Danzl, Regional Manager - Maui

GaryDanzl_3It's tough to get Gary Danzl out of work mode. As the Regional Manager of Maui County, Gary is so passionate about his job that it’s difficult sometimes to take time off. He puts in long work weeks, not because he needs to, but because he loves his work so much. A few things keep Gary motivated about working at HPM. One of those things is the company values. “Honor and keeping your word are things that go a long way here,” said Gary. He describes a leadership that knows its roots of perseverance having survived two tsunamis on Hawaiʻi Island throughout its history. Gary also describes the company as constantly evolving and growing. “You donʻt know the depths of it before you work here, but HPM’s innovation and excellence are what retains us as employees,” Gary adds.

Gary admires how HPM is a true community steward on Maui. It is the most rewarding thing for Gary as an owner-employee and he is proud to work for a company that not only brings forth ideas, but provides resources to bring ideas to life.

As Regional Manager, Gary also sees how committed HPM is to customer service. He oversees all business activities in Maui County including four retail locations and the company’s central Maui base yard, and leads HPM Maui’s commitment to customer convenience, reliable stocked inventory, and competitive pricing.
