Looking Ahead, The Future of Home Design

Written by HPM Building Supply | Dec 15, 2023 12:11:57 AM

Come and dream with us as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of our Kitchen & Bath Design Program and look into the future. In the last segment of our three-part blog series, we look forward, envisioning the evolution that awaits kitchens and baths in the years to come. We'll dive into how technology, sustainable materials and exciting design trends are expected to continue to reshape our spaces.

Our designers, with their keen insights, guide us through this exciting landscape, offering glimpses of AI-integrated creations, environmentally conscious materials, and multi-functional layouts that redefine how we interact with our living spaces. While we look to the future, even our program's aspirations are stretching beyond the current scope. Our commitment to extending the reach of our Home Design Program across all Hawaiian Islands burns brightly, promising accessible and exceptional design solutions for every community. The stage is set, the canvas is ready, and the next chapter of design is about to be written. Welcome to the future where creativity knows no bounds, sustainability is a guiding principle, and design is only limited by your imagination.

Pushing the Boundaries of Technology

The field of kitchen and bath design is quickly changing, fueled by the rapid evolution of technology. We asked, and they answered! Our designers are painting a picture of a future where AI, smart appliances, and virtual reality become indispensable tools in the design process. The convenience of AI-driven kitchens is already emerging, with virtual reality technology allowing homeowners to experience their spaces in intricate detail.

“I saw a TikTok where the person asked AI to design a kitchen. That kind of thing is already happening.” says Brad.

Yet, amidst this tech-infused landscape, the designer's touch remains irreplaceable. While futuristic AI might cook up a kitchen design, the human touch and expertise in best practices and past experiences remain unparalleled. Our designers like Jesika and Rose also share their excitement over the evolution of technology in design, highlighting the potential of 4D or VR solutions to ease communication between clients and designers. Imagine putting on VR glasses and being transported to your future kitchen or bath. This kind of technology is already gaining traction in many areas of modern life.

Beyond AI, 4D, and VR, technology in design extends to smart appliances and robotic advancements, too. From refrigerators that can automatically order groceries to robotic arms revolutionizing household tasks, a new age is upon us. “We could see kitchens become smaller or look completely different from what we know if robots become more accessible,” says Kriss. Smart appliances connected to the internet promise not only convenience but also an elevated user experience. Designers like Amber envision an accessible and inclusive future where kitchens and baths are designed to cater to diverse needs and disabilities while still maintaining their aesthetics and functionality.

Interestingly, composite luminescence, capable of changing brightness and colors at the push of a button, was a hot topic for our designers. Many of them see how emerging technologies can be applied to home design. “Imagine being able to change the color of your floor to match your mood,” says Paul. For Kriss, he sees the same being true in cabinets. "Changing the color or layout of your cabinets with the push of a button could happen in the near future," he says.

As the world of design becomes ever more connected and customizable, it promises to transform kitchens and baths into functional and innovative spaces, ensuring that the heart of your home beats with efficiency.

Innovative Materials and Sustainable Choices

In the realm of kitchen and bath design, innovation is also shaping our material and product options. We're seeing more sustainable, durable, and attractive materials as consumers push for better quality and more environmentally friendly choices.

Amidst this wave of innovation, the emergence of new laminate lines proves how far technology has propelled materials. “Composite materials used to feel like limitations but are now incredibly realistic and better quality than the real thing,” says Casey. With the use of artificial materials in composites, you'll find a product that is water resistant, more resilient and longer lasting than its all-wood counterpart. Considerations of health, eco-friendliness and durability are also converging to drive environmentally sustainable options. “Graber, for instance, has embraced materials that prioritize the well-being of families. These materials possess anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, offering safer environments for children to thrive in,” says Senior Window Coverings Sales Specialist, Lyn.

As we look ahead, engineered plywood options are set to make a mark for those seeking the timeless appeal of real wood while being mindful of environmental impact. Imagine materials resilient against various climates, capable of weathering water or sun damage like Open Air Outdoor Cabinetry. Some newer product lines incorporate materials that reduce the need for wood while creating a more durable product. While real wood cabinets have dominated our spaces over the last century, recycled materials and content, like laminates, are paving the way for greener choices. “A lot of our brands, like Bellmont Cabinetry, already have an eco-friendly line, so I see this trend continuing into the future,” says Victoria. The rise of alternatives such as MDF fiberboards versus plywood represents the rise of both cost-efficiency and environmental mindfulness for consumers. “The important thing is that these materials will become more accessible and affordable for the everyday customer in the future,” says Kaylen. This extends to appliances, too, with water-saving dishwashers and Energy-Star rated appliances at the forefront. Graywater systems that recycle used water, once seen as innovative novelties, may soon become integral, reflecting a future where sustainable practices are the norm rather than the exception. Accomodating these evolving appliances and technologies into our spaces will present new opportunities for designers and better options for customers.

Trends of the Future

Our designers forecast their near-future trend predictions poised to take over our homes. While some of these trends are already starting to take hold, we anticipate these trends to continue making their way to Hawaiʻi over the coming years.

  • Luxury homes are embracing the sleek minimalism of European design, characterized by touchless features and hardware-free aesthetics, marrying modern aesthetics and seamless functionality.
  • The resurgence of natural materials, particularly wood, will continue enhancing spaces with timeless charm.
  • Drapery takes center stage as a transformative design tool, and the allure of flat minimalism continues to captivate, offering spaces that are both serene and functional.
  • In terms of color, a resurgence of 70s-inspired hues such as oranges and reds could come back in style.

Design trends are cyclical in nature. As design trends come full circle, past favorites return in modern form, reflecting the relationship between innovation and timelessness. Amidst these shifts, homeowners' preferences remain pivotal, educated by design principles and the assistance of home design experts.

HPM's Home Design Program in the Next 25 Years

As we eagerly anticipate the unfolding of these captivating design trends, we look toward to what lies ahead for the Kitchen and Bath Program at HPM. In envisioning the near future, our designers see the possibility of an interior design service complementing the program, extending our expertise to help customers curate their spaces with furniture, appliances, and personalized decor choices. “I would love to see our program expand into true interior design,” says Jesika. This expansion would embody our commitment to infusing homes with intimate and unique touches. The potential of expanding our HPM offerings, including ventures like Akamai Cabinet Collection, could also be on the horizon. “I’d like to see a future where we handle fabrication and installation in-house.” says Brad. A vision that promises a new era of self-sufficiency and quality control for the program while embodying our company values of heart, character, and growth.
