Metal Roofing: A Superior Choice in Hawaii

The roofing material you choose will affect your building’s maintenance and replacement needs moving forward. Thinking ahead, it’s best to invest in a roof that will last decades, saving time and money in the long run. In Hawaii, metal roofing is a top pick for many reasons.

Durability & longevity

A metal roof is intended to last for 30 years or more with little maintenance and withstand inclement weather. The non-flammable material will not catch on fire from a lightning strike but disperse the energy safely through the building. Installed properly, it can also withstand high winds.

A metal roofing system can be customized to fit different pitches on a building.

Metal roofing comes in two systems: exposed fastened and standing seam. An exposed fastened system consists of panels fastened with exposed, color-matched screws that penetrate the roof to secure it to the roof framing. They come in three styles that offer a nostalgic touch. Since exposed fastened panels are faster to install and have fewer parts, the overall system is more affordable than a standing seam system. Keep in mind that the fasteners require routine maintenance, including checking and tightening them as needed.

A standing seam system uses concealed clips to fasten the panels, which snap together or are mechanically joined. The range of profiles provides options to suit any building’s architecture, while the hidden clips create a sleeker look. Though the panels require more labor and upfront cost, their tight construction results in a more weather-resistant system.

For better protection against hurricane damage, choose a mechanically seamed roofing system because its panels lock together. If it works with your budget, the cost of expert installation and labor for a mechanically seamed metal roof is well worth it. You’ll be more prepared for extreme weather with the roof’s boosted wind resistance.

Environmentally friendly material

All metal roof panels have some recycled content, and the material is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. If you’re planning to add a solar PV system, solar panels can be installed on standing seam systems with clips that don’t penetrate the roofing material. Metal roofs can also be upgraded with cool pigments that reflect UV rays, reducing heat gain.

Customization options

Metal roofing can be manufactured in a variety of colors, from black and white to green and blue, or you can order specialty colors for larger projects. There are pan styles to choose from as well, depending on the system.

Some people find the sound of rain falling on a metal roof soothing, while others dislike it. If you prefer to reduce the sound, various options are available, such as ceiling insulation or other noise-barring construction.

Is metal roofing right for you?

With all its benefits, metal can be a smart investment for buildings with sloped roofs. Consult a roofer for a professional assessment to see if metal roofing is a good option for your building. While the upfront cost may be more than that of other materials, such as shingles, metal will last longer. Installed and maintained correctly, a metal roof can far exceed its 30-year life expectancy.
