Exposed Fastened Panels vs. Standing Seam Panels

After learning all the benefits of metal roofing, perhaps now you’re considering building your new home or reroofing your existing house with HPM Custom Metal Roofing. We all know that your house is probably one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your lifetime. Now it’s up to you to make an informed decision on a metal roofing panel that will best protect it.

At HPM we offer two types of metal roofing: Exposed Fastened panels and Standing Seam panels.

Exposed Fastened Panels

Exposed Fastened panels are manufactured to your exact lengths and specifications at our product facility in Kea‘au on the Big Island and delivered to your jobsite. These panels are fastened with exposed color-matched stainless steel screws that penetrate the metal roofing and secure to the sheathing or purlins beneath.

In general, fastened through panels are less expensive than Standing Seam panels. Why?  With panels up to 36” wide that makes installation fast, so labor charges will be less. There are also less parts and pieces to the system.

Our most popular Exposed Fastened panel, the Commercial Rib pattern also known as “Pattern 7”, is the strongest metal roofing panel because of its corrugation design.

Standing Seam Panels

Conversely, our Standing Seam panels can be manufactured right on your jobsite using a portable roll-former. By producing these panels at your jobsite, we’re able to produce panels in longer lengths. Panels over 100’ are no problem. These panels are attached to the structure using concealed clips or screws and the ribs are fastened together by either snapping or mechanically seaming the pieces together.

Standing Seam panels cost a little more than Exposed Fastened panels, and with no penetrations in the panels provides a more weather resistant system. Concealed clips hidden below the panels, allows the panel to move freely for thermal expansion. This free movement makes for a quieter roof system.

From a design perspective, the assortment of Standing Seam profiles and options such as curved panels allow you to match and complement the design of your building. Concealed clips hide the connection points and offer a smoother roof appearance for your home.

The Shur-Lock is our most popular Standing Seam panel out of our eight we manufacture. Solar panels can also be easily installed on Shur-Lock panels using clamps instead of penetrating screws.
