A Reflection on More Than 100 Acts of Service Accomplished in Our Community

In 2021, HPM celebrated its 100th anniversary, and to mark this milestone, we partnered with nonprofits and community organizations to complete 100 Acts of Service. Now, one year later, we succeeded in fulfilling 101 Acts of Service!

We have a lot to look back on, with our service mission spanning Hawaii Island, Oahu, Kauai, and Maui. This initiative was spearheaded by the Community Building Team, a group of HPM Owner-Employees who are passionate about giving back. They organized and rallied our team to participate in everything from food drives and trash pickups to dog adoptions and school supply drives. YouTube_Mockup

“Being a part of HPM’s Acts of Service was an amazing experience!” said Dayna Kuma, Lumberyard Manager at HPM Kona. “One of the best things I could have done, not only for those we’ve been able to help, but for me personally.”

"These engagements with our community have renewed my sense of hope, reminded me of the blessings I have, and that together, we are all going to make it."

“Something magical happens when you can meet a simple community need: sorting through fruits for the food basket, drawing homemade care cards for kupuna you do not personally know, hand-picking necessities and toys to package up as makana at the diaper bank, donating time to set up a Christmas light display where keiki can come and visit with Santa... witnessing the sparkle in the eyes of those we’ve impacted will stay with me forever. I am a better human for it.”

For every Act, big or small, we were motivated and humbled knowing we were doing good in our community. Here are some of the ways we made a difference.

  • Packed ‘ohana food drop boxes eight times throughout 2021 for The Food Basket
  • Hosted the Linens for Loveable Friends Drive for Aloha ‘Īlio Rescue
  • Collected 140 pounds of debris and 25 pounds of derelict fishing lines and net bundles at Lae O Kamilo (Kamilo Point) with Hawai‘i Wildlife Fund
  • Built 4 out of 12 picnic tables for the Rotary Club of Poipu Beach to be used for county parks. The eight other picnic tables will be built in 2022

“I am proud to say that I participated in the 100 Acts of Service with HPM,” said Krystle De Los Santos, Safety Manager at HPM Shipman."

“It means a lot to me to be able to be part of my community and give back as much as possible."

"I learned the most volunteering with Hawaii Wildlife. I was able to learn how it all began, all the different opportunities to help, as well as learn more about the land.”

  • Collected 1,172 pounds of food for the Maui Food Bank, providing 1,406 meals
  • Handed out candy bags at the Halloween Monster Maze at Keopulani Park and the Big Island Substance Abuse (BISAC)  Trunk or Treat at HPM Keaau
  • Collected 7,597 keiki masks to donate to local elementary and preschools
  • Collected 2,970 diapers and 52 wipe packs for the Hawai‘i Diaper Bank and Aloha Diaper Bank
  • Hosted a Book Drive with Waiākea® Water, collecting 736 books to donate to Kalanianaole Elementary School; Waiākea Water matched the donation
  • Sponsored 37 children and kūpuna through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree

“Coming from Miyake Concrete, community service was always important to our company,” said Michelle Miyake-Tuquero, Controller at Miyake – HPM Kihei. “In 2021, for the 100 Acts of Service, our team really tried to help as many groups as we could, like feeding the elderly, partnering with the county for the Halloween Maze, and collecting masks for keiki.”

"I was excited to be able to help so many in our community and proud of our team who helped us execute a new service project nearly every month.”
